Toric IOL

In some cases after cataracts surgery, vision may still be blurred by varying degrees of astigmatism, an oblong football shape to the cornea, or lens of the eye. Toric lens technology to reduce the effects of astigmatism has been applied to glasses and contact lenses for years.

Now this corrective technology is also available in Toric intraocular lens (IOL) implants. When evaluating your vision correction needs, Dr. Sunalp can assess if you would benefit from Toric IOL after your cataracts surgery.

Indications

• Cataracts
• Moderate to severe astigmatism (folded or aberrant surface area)

Astigmatism can cause blurriness even after the diseased lens is removed during cataracts surgery. Since the lens needs to be replaced, patients with moderate to severe astigmatism present may benefit from using a specially designed Toric IOL to replace the diseased lens.

Procedure

During the cataracts procedure, the crystalline lens of the eye is broken up and removed. Once removed, the IOL is set to replace the lens. A Toric IOL is configured to smooth out the irregularities that are present with astigmatism.

The Toric IOL is made of silicone, which is stable, non-toxic, and readily accepted by the body. Studies show that silicone lenses perform better and provide higher quality vision that more traditional acrylic lenses.

Cataracts surgery in conjunction with the Toric IOL can decrease blurred vision dramatically.

Complications

As with all surgeries, there may be complications, including:

• Minor discomfort
• Halos around light
• Ghosting
