Eye Exams

Below is a listing of the various tests we have available at the Sunalp LaserVision Center. Many of these tests are performed as part of our regular ophthalmology examinations, but others are specially ordered to determine the presence of specific conditions, or are required prior to surgery.

Fluorescein Angiography (F/A)

The FA test provides much information about the blood vessels at the back of the eye, which would not be found during a normal examination. Fluorescein, a kind of dye, is injected into the arm. In a short time, the dye travels to the blood vessels in the eye. A special camera equipped with filters that highlight the dye takes a picture of the retina. The doctor can see the path the dye travels inside the eye, and can identify problems not otherwise visible. This test is used to detect glaucoma or macular degeneration.

Heidelberg Exam

The Heidelberg Retina Tomograph uses a laser to take pictures of the back of your eye and use the information to create a three-dimensional map of the surface of your retina. This map can be used to monitor any changes in the topography of your retina. This test is used to diagnose and monitor glaucoma.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound tests use sound waves to map the interior of the eye. The Sunalp LaserVision Center uses the A-Scan to determine eye length and refraction.

Visual Field

The visual field is used to test peripheral vision. The appearance of the equipment varies, but most have a white bowl with a fixation light in the center. The patient (whose pupils have been dilated prior to the test) sits in front of the machine and stares straight ahead at the fixation light through a lens that matches their refraction. Other lights will flash from the sides of the bowl. The patient is to continue staring straight ahead, but is instructed to press a button every time a light flashes in their peripheral view. This test is used to monitor certain diseases such as glaucoma (which affects the peripheral vision), and as a screening test prior to surgery.
