ReZoom Intraocular Lenses (IOL)

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) have long been the treatment of choice for cataracts, but recently the technology has improved, making them more versatile, so that they can treat presbyopia as well. In the past, treatment of presbyopia has meant glasses or contact lenses. With aging eyes, both distance and near vision usually deteriorate. If you suffer from presbyopia and are not a good candidate for LASIK, intraocular lens replacement surgery might be a good alternative option.

Thanks to vast improvements in surgical ophthalmologic treatment, there are new options available. Intraocular lenses (IOL) can replace the old, inefficient lenses of the eyes after the lenses are removed. There are several types of IOLs on the market today. Traditional IOLs are monofocal, meaning that they only correct nearsightedness or farsightedness. While better than the old inefficient lens they replace, the monofocal lens may require glasses or contacts to perform certain tasks.

New IOLs like ReZoom actually help with both types of vision. The technology used in ReZoom lenses distributes light through 3 to 5 optic zones depending on your needs. The central zone helps with distance vision focus, with near focusing improving through the outer zones.

Most patients experience good near and distance vision and are able to put away their glasses and contact lenses.

Procedure

The eye's natural lens is broken up with the use of lasers and removed from the eye. In the space vacated by the natural lens of the eye, Dr. Sunalp places the new IOL.

Only one lens is implanted at a time and the procedure only takes from 15 to 45 minutes. The second eye is usually scheduled from 3 to 8 days later. Total recovery from the surgery is 1 to 2 weeks; however, patients can generally return to most normal activities immediately.
