Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)
in Visalia, Fresno and Tulare, California
What Is PRK?
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a surgical procedure for the treatment of mild to moderate myopia.
How To Qualify For PRK
To qualify for PRK, you should see Dr. Sunalp for a complete examination, to determine the severity of your condition and to make recommendation
The Procedure Itself
Photorefractive Keratectomy involves two steps:
- First, the doctor removes the top layer (epithelial) of your cornea.
- Next, the excimer laser is used to precisely flatten the surface of your cornea. Afterward, the epithelial layer is allowed to heal.
When your eye heals, the cornea will reflect light much more accurately, thus improving your distance vision.
Comparisons - PRK vs. LASIK
PRK and LASIK are both intended for the treatment of refractive errors. PRK is the older of the two procedures. However, LASIK is more appropriate for patients with high degrees of myopia. For mild to moderate nearsightedness, either PRK or LASIK will do. Both procedures have typically good results. However, with PRK it takes a while longer to achieve those good results.
LASIK
LASIK involves only two surgical steps: the creation of the corneal flap, and the actual resculpting of the cornea. Anesthesia consists of a few eye drops applied before surgery to numb the eye. There is no damage to the surrounding tissue. Afterward, no stitches are required to reattach the corneal flap, and the healing of the epithelium is very rapid. LASIK involves more mechanical steps than PRK, and greater precision to create the flap. LASIK can correct higher degrees of refractive error (-6.00 diopters to -14.00 diopters).
PRK
PRK is the older of the two procedures. It involves a single surgical step, the actual resculpting of the cornea. However, this procedure has a longer recovery time and may cause some discomfort for the first day or so. PRK is only able to correct lower degrees of refractive error (-1.00 diopters to -6.00 diopters). It tends to be a bit more inexpensive than LASIK, depending on your location.
