LASIK Vision Correction
in Visalia, Fresno and Tulare, California
Advancements in refractive eye surgery since the 1950s permitted people to receive permanent relief from previously uncorrectable vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Early corrective techniques include radial keratotomy (RK) and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), which have since evolved into LASIK.
LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted in SItu Keratomileusis. At the Sunalp Laser Vision clinic, the latest in LASIK technology is available for your vision correction needs.
Indications
- Myopia (near-sightedness)
- Hyperopia (far-sightedness)
- Astigmatism (folding or aberrant surface area)
Procedure
Prior to surgery, you will be instructed not to wear contact lenses for a period of 1 to 4 weeks to allow the cornea to resume its natural shape.
A mild anesthetic is given orally, and eye drops are applied. You will be fully awake during the procedure. Both eyes can be treated at the same time, taking only 10 to 15 minutes per eye.
During the procedure, a flap in the cornea is created and folded back out of the way, exposing a layer called the stroma. While you focus your eye on a fixed point, the laser is guided across the stroma and is remodeled to the doctor's specifications. The laser vaporizes the tissue in a finely controlled manner. Only the areas specifically targeted by the laser are affected: there is no collateral damage in a LASIK vision correction procedure.
Once the laser remodeling is complete, the corneal flap is carefully repositioned over the treated area. Dr. Sunalp will ensure that no air bubbles or debris are trapped under the corneal layer. The moisture of the eye holds the flap in place right away.
Antibiotic and analgesic eye drops are prescribed after the procedure. Darkened glasses and a sleep guard are also provided to protect against bright light and nighttime rubbing.
In most cases, you can resume normal activity very quickly, often returning to work the next day, although strenuous activities or activities in which there is a danger of trauma to the eye should be avoided for a period of weeks.
Complications
As with any surgical procedure, complications may arise. Some of which can be corrected with further LASIK treatment. Some of the more common complications include:
- Dry eyes
- Halos around lights at night
- Ghost images
- Infection
- Pain or discomfort
Many of these complications are minimized when you select a trained physician with years of experience. Dr. Sunalp has performed thousands of LASIK treatments and is board certified in ophthalmology.
