Visian ICL, Implantable Contact Lenses

in Visalia, Fresno and Tulare, California

If you are tired of wearing glasses or worrying about losing your contact lenses there is a new increasingly popular option, a so-called implantable contact lenses.

Nearsighted and farsighted patient who do not qualify for LASIK and who do not need an intraocular lens implant now have an alternative option, the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens. Dr. Sunalp will evaluate your vision needs and determine if the Visian ICL is right for you.

Technology

The Visian ICL, sometimes called an implantable contact lens, differs from other intraocular lenses (IOL) used to treat cataracts in that it does not replace your natural eye lens, but supplements it, correcting your vision much as a regular contact lens. This type of lens is called a phakic lens and it is placed between the lens and the iris.

The Visian ICL is foldable and requires a much smaller incision during surgery than other implantable lenses. The lens is made of a collagen polymer making it biocompatible with the eye.

Indications

  • Myopia
  • Hyperopia
  • Astigmatism

The Visian ICL is not currently available for treating presbyopia, the natural deterioration of your eyes as you age, but is highly effective for most other vision correction.

Procedure

  • A small incision is made in the cornea
  • The ICL is inserted between the lens and iris
  • The ICL is unfolded and positioned properly

Eye drops and a follow up visit on the following day are prescribed. You can return to normal activities immediately after surgery.

Complications

  • Infection
  • Minor irritation

Because of the smaller incision, and the ease of insertion, complications for this procedure are minimal. Should a problem arise, or your vision change, the ICL can be removed or replaced.

To determine whether you are a good candidate for a Visian ICL implantable contact lenses, it is important to discuss your vision and lifestyle goals with a board-certified ophthalmologist with extensive experience, such as Dr. Murad Sunalp.
