CustomVue Monovision LASIK
in Visalia, Fresno and Tulare, California
In the past, people receiving vision correction surgery often required glasses for reading. With CustomVue Monovision LASIK technology physicians can treat hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism using a technique called monovision, which can reduce the need for spectacles.
This technique is used for full correction of the patient's dominant eye, and under-correction of the non-dominant eye. This allows one eye to be functional at distance vision while maintaining good vision for reading.
When deciding on CustomVue Monovision LASIK correction, Dr. Sunalp may prescribe monovision contact lenses to simulate the effects of the surgery. Some patients experience problems adapting to the effects of monovision correction, and may find the procedure unsuitable.
The Technology
CustomVue Monovision LASIK, using wave-front technology, runs a detailed scan of the eye. The wave front guided measurements create a precise plan for customized vision correction.
CustomVue Monovision LASIK is the first wave-front guided technology approved by the FDA for use in treating hyperopia with and without astigmatism.
Indications
- Myopia (near-sightedness)
- Hyperopia (far-sightedness)
- Astigmatism (folding or aberrant surface area)
Procedure
As in traditional LASIK surgery, you will be instructed to discontinue use of contact lenses for a period of 1 to 4 weeks to allow the cornea to resume its natural shape.
A mild anesthetic is given orally, and eye drops are applied. During the procedure, you are fully awake. Both eyes can be treated at the same time, taking only 10 to 15 minutes per eye.
During the procedure, a flap in the cornea is created and folded back out of the way, exposing a layer called the stroma. While you focus your eye on a fixed point, the laser is guided across the stroma and is remodeled to the wave-front guided computer specifications. With the help of the wave-front guided procedure, Dr. Sunalp can sculpt a more optically ideal eye.
Once the laser remodeling is complete, the corneal flap is carefully repositioned over the treated area. Dr. Sunalp will ensure that no air bubbles or debris is trapped under the corneal layer. The flap remains in place due to the natural bond that takes place because of the moisture of the eye.
Antibiotic and analgesic eye drops are prescribed after the procedure. Darkened glasses and a sleep guard are also provided to protect against bright light and nighttime rubbing respectively.
Many surgeons report greater patient satisfaction with CustomVue Monovision LASIK than traditional LASIK procedures. According to a study by Visx, the manufacturer of CustomVue Monovision LASIK, over 95% of patients were corrected to 20/40 vision or better.
