Crystalens Intraocular Lenses (IOL)
Thanks to vast improvements in surgical ophthalmologic treatment, patients suffering from presbyopia and cataracts have more options than wearing bifocals and thick heavy eyeglasses.
Intraocular lenses (IOL) are often used to replace the old or diseased natural lenses of the eyes after they are removed. There are several types of IOLs on the market today. Based on your vision correction needs, cataract eye surgeon Dr. Sunalp will help you determine which IOL is right for you.
Indications
- Cataracts
- Presbyopia
- Need good night vision
- Reading glasses use is not an issue
Crystalens IOLs are more effective than other IOLs like ReSTOR and ReZoom if you are concerned with potential night vision impairment. However, Crystalens IOLs are somewhat less effective in the intermediate ranges and may still necessitate wearing reading glasses.
IOL implants like Crystalens actually help with both distance and near vision. This type of lens is capable of expanding and contracting much like the natural lens of the eye, accommodating for all distances.
Patients experience good, clear vision following surgery and are able to focus easily both near and far. Night vision is not affected as it often is with other IOLs.
Procedure
Crystalens is an aphakic lens, meaning that it replaces the eyes natural lens after removal. The new lens is placed in the space where the eye's natural lens was removed. The Crystalens IOL attaches to the muscles in the eye that allow the implant to focus more naturally.
Only one lens is implanted at a time and the procedure takes from 15 to 45 minutes. The second eye is usually scheduled 3 to 8 days later. Total recovery from the surgery is 1 to 2 weeks; however, most tasks can be undertaken right away.
Complications
- Infection
- Halos
- Minor irritation
Other intraocular lenses like ReZoom and ReSTOR may work better for your vision goals.
