Presbyopia Surgeon Treats CK
in Visalia, Fresno and Tulare, California
Beginning around age 40, most people begin to suffer from presbyopia, which literally means "old eyes". The condition is characterized by an inability of the eye to accommodate or focus on objects at different distances. Spectacles, bifocals, and contact lenses are the tried and true remedies for this condition. With advancements in surgical procedures, temporary fixes are no longer the only way to improve aging eyesight. Presbyopia surgeon Dr. Sunalp is trained in the latest surgical procedure for treating presbyopia, Conductive Keratoplasty or CK.
Indications
- Hyperopia
- Presbyopia
People over age 40 who suffer from hyperopia or presbyopia, and are not good candidates for LASIK, may benefit from CK, which does not require either mechanical cutting, or laser cutting of ocular tissues.
Contraindications
Patients with severe myopia or astigmatism are not treatable with CK at this time, although advancements in the procedure are being made in those areas. Other surgical procedures like LASIK may benefit patients who are not good candidates for CK.
Procedure
CK uses low level radio pulses of energy to reduce collagen found around the cornea. This increases the length of the eyeball and improves the focusing capabilities of the eye.
Originally approved for hyperopia in 2002, CK was approved for treating presbyopia as well in 2004. When treating presbyopia, CK incorporates the monovision technique, correcting one eye for distance vision, and leaving the other eye untreated for near vision.
Like other monovision treatments, Dr. Sunalp may prescribe monovision contact lenses on a trial basis to ensure that you can tolerate the vision adjustments monovision delivers.
Complications
CK is a minimally invasive procedure and has less surgical risk than other vision correction surgeries.
Patients may feel some discomfort, vision anomalies, and foreign body sensations, but these are temporary and soon disappear.
To determine whether you are a good candidate for CK eye surgery using the latest technology, it is important to find a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in vision correction, like Dr. Murad Sunalp.
