Vision Correction Surgery
in Visalia, Fresno and Tulare, California
Am I a Candidate for LASIK?
Considering laser vision correction surgery? The most important factor is your overall eye health. The Laser Vision Center in Tulare, CA performs a comprehensive eye examination to determine if you are a good candidate for laser vision correction using some of these criteria:
- Mild to moderate nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism
- A stable prescription for the past 12 months
- Sufficient corneal thickness
- Good overall health
- Over the age of 18
- Not pregnant or nursing
- Realistic expectations
- Awareness of possible risks and complications
General Risks of Laser Surgery
While the majority of patients are pleased with the results of their vision surgery, risks and complications can occur including:
- Debilitating visual symptoms, such as glare, halos, or double vision, particularly at night or in low light situations such as fog.
- Under- or over-treatment. While the goal is to achieve 20/20 vision without glasses or contacts, you may still require corrective lenses or reading glasses after surgery.
- Severe dry eye syndrome. Your eyes need tears for best function. Surgery may reduce tear production temporarily or permanently, which causes discomfort and may reduce visual quality.
- Patients with large refractive errors do not have the best results. You may still require glasses or contacts.
- Farsighted patients may experience diminishing results with age.
Monovision
Monovision corrects presbyopia, or farsightedness, correcting one eye for distance vision and one eye for near vision. While monovision is an adequate solution for some farsighted patients, others have difficulty adjusting and experience less acceptable results. Wearing glasses or contact lenses may still be required when eyes must be corrected equally for far vision, such as when driving, or for close-up vision, such as when reading small print.
As we age, our visual needs change. Patients with monovision may find the results are less effective as their farsightedness or nearsightedness increases with age.
Choose the Right Physician
There are no guarantees in medicine. If the doctor you are considering for your refractive surgery advertises low-priced ‘deals’ and too-good-to-be-true guarantees, you may want to think twice. Eye surgery is a serious procedure. Your eye surgeon should be a board certified ophthalmologist like Dr. Murad Sunalp, with extensive training and years of experience. Your vision is far too precious to choose a surgeon based on price alone.
