LASIK for Children
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has currently approved LASIK only for adults aged 18 and up, and with good reason. The eyes develop and change until a person is in his or her late teens or early 20s, and this alone is a good reason not to do LASIK on children. No one know what the impact of tissue removal will be on the growing cornea. And, in addition, children will have to live with the effects of LASIK treatment for much longer than adults that receive the procedure, and no one knows what the effects of LASIK may be over a period of eighty years or more. For these reasons, we at Sunalp LaserVision do not perform LASIK on children except under very extreme circumstances.
